In that year Rolex had the honor to be one of the sponsors of 24 Hours Daytona race. The collection Daytona was named after this race.
In 1987 Rolex stopped production of Daytona watches and in 1988 the brand offered new Daytona watches with bigger case and automatic movement. At first new Rolex Daytona models had Zenith El Primero caliber. In 2000 Rolex began production of Daytona watches with in-house movement.
